The Necropolis Sorrow is the last remaining city of a forgotten empire. The city itself was originally built on an island in the middle of the River of Tears, but over the centuries has expanded to cover the shores of the river for several miles. The homes and businesses of Sorrow are built of black and gray basalt and interspersed among them are the endless tombs, mausoleums and shrines to the dead that give the city its business.
Although all of the major guilds have a guildhouse in Sorrow, the city is dominated by its own mysterious Guild of Mortwrights. The Guild is tasked with the rituals and observances that surround death, and it is common belief that burial within Sorrow will ensure that the soul reaches its final reward. Those who cannot afford the price can instead choose to serve the city for one year. These people are guaranteed a proper burial within the walls and it is common for young people from the lands around Sorrow to travel there and work their year before learning a trade or joining a guild. Those who show promise during their stay may even be invited to join as an Initiate of the Mortwrights, and this is considered to be a great honor.
